You probably have a lot of nice items in your home, possibly a new television, DVD player, stereo, nice furniture, clothing, jewelry, tools and a lot more. But can you prove it? Do you have a list of your items, pictures or video tape? Before the storm, take pictures, video tape your home, list all major items in an excel spreadhsheet.
Document your household inventory is easiest by taking photos of every room including the attic, storeage and garage. Digital cameras and camcorders are great for this purpose.
Once you have the photographic record you should add the details. Make, Model and serial number of all electronics and appliances. If you have receipts for your big-ticket items such as appliances, furniture, art and jewelry make copies and keep these in a safe place.
You may want to copy your inventory and important documents. Store this copy somewhere other than your house, preferably in another town, with a relative or in a safety deposit box. Then, if a storm damages your home, you have good records stored elsewhere to provide the insurance company.
